Homesick

I wrote this a long time ago from another place in my life (in more ways than one.) It’s not where I am now, but I’m thinking a lot of folks can relate one time or another. There is a plaque on our studio wall paying homage to this song, but I never did anything with it until Billy encouraged me to revive it for this project. We don’t often write in this sort of Americana-country style, but we are Bird Mancini after all….

I always liked this song and thought it could use a bit of updating. I sort of remembered the chords but didn’t really. Without looking back to see what the real chords were, I came up with some alternate inversions and ideas. It’s different than anything else on the CD. I like to hear different styles when I listen to a full album. So…here’s a different style.

Homesick

Sitting on the back porch laughing
Watching the daylight passing
Weren’t it great to live this life in style?
You can have your big old city
Neon lights are kinda pretty, but
I’d much rather see the open sky
Someday I’ll find a place that’s mine
But I get homesick all the time
My trees weren’t in a park
Safe to walk after dark
Seems as though I had a simpler life
My animals weren’t in a zoo
What’s in a zoo is you
When you’re caged in by walls on every side
I know I’ll find my place in time
But I get homesick all the time
I pound the pavement for a better place to stay
Someplace that feels like home
But running, building, crowding everywhere I turn
I only feel more alone
Been so long since I’ve seen your face
You bright wide open space
And I am gonna see you again someday
Right now my money is tight
Can’t seem to do anything right
“Maybe next year” is all I seem to say
I still get homesick every day
But…I know someday I’ll find my way
